El Cerrito, Spanish for the little hill, incorporated in 1917. The members of Creedence Clearwater Revival grew up here and began playing together at the local junior high school in the late 1950s. San Pablo Avenue is the main street, with a 1937 movie theater restored by the city, and the neighborhoods above it climb to a ridge with wide views of the Golden Gate.
